Complement Pathway, Mannose-Binding Lectin. English. Lectin Complement Pathway. Lectin Pathway, Mannan-Binding (Complement Activation).

The lectin complement pathway is an essential part of the complement system, which provides an effective defense against invading pathogens and apoptotic cells in an organism. Similar to classical pathway, the lectin pathway is also a proteolytic cascade that elicits various effector functions including phagocytosis, cell lysis, inflammation, and guidance of the adaptative immune response. The lectin pathway of the complement is activated when MBL binds to hexoses with carbon 3 and 4 OH groups such as N -acetyl- d-glucosamine, glucose, fucose, and mannose. These sugars are expressed as repetitive O-polysaccharide structures on surfaces of bacteria, yeast, parasites, mycobacteria, and certain viruses. Mannose-binding lectin (MBL), also known as mannan-binding protein (MBP), is a protein that is involved in complement activation via the lectin pathway. The complement system provides immediate defense against infection and has proinflammatory effects. MBL deficiency has been variously defined as a serum levels either <100 or <500 ng/mL.

Mannan-binding lectin - Wikipedia This cleavage can occur via three mechanisms (classical pathway, alternative pathway and lectin pathway) that ultimately lead to the formation of a C3 convertase. Lectin induced complement pathway The complement system is the major effector of the humoral branch of the immune system, acting to protect the host from microorganisms such as bacteria. Complement components are designated by numerals ( C1 - C9 ), by letter symbols (e.g., Complement factor I ( Factor I )), or by trivial names.

Stage 1 • Microbes enter the body through wounds, respiratory means, digestion, etc. Microbes Person The complement system is activated cascadically via three distinct major routes: classical pathway (CP), alternative pathway (AP) or lectin pathway (LP). The unique factors associated with the latter are collectins (mannose-binding lectin, collectin-10, collectin-11), ficolins (ficolin-1, ficolin-2, ficolin-3) and proteins of the mannose-binding lectin-associated serine protease (MASP) family The complement system can be activated through three pathways: the classical pathway, the alternative pathway, and the lectin pathway.
